Recipes for Home-Made Green Cleaning Products

We told you how to choose green cleaning products, but here are some household ingredients you can use for your basic cleaning needs. You can use these products alone or in combination for environmentally safe cleaning.

Baking Soda

Use baking soda to clean, deodorize, soften water, and scour. With lemon juice, baking soda makes a great air freshener that actually absorbs odor instead of just masking it. For an all-purpose cleaner, mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with  1/4 cup of baking soda into 1/2 gallon of water. Store it for use to remove water deposit stains in your bathroom and on your windows.

The lemon contains one of the strongest food acids, and works effectively against most household bacteria. Grind a slice of lemon in your garbage disposal to freshen the air in your kitchen. It is also great for cleaning cutting boards. Squeeze some juice into really rough stains and let it sit for about 10 minutes. You can also use lemon to polish wood furniture and shoes and works great against mold and mildew.

White Vinegar

Vinegar will cut grease, and remove mildew, odors, and some stains. Put a bit with lemon juice in small dishes around the house to absorb odors. Simmer it on the stove while cooking to prevent smells from lingering. Mix vinegar with water to remove carpet stains, or with salt and borax for a heavy-duty carpet cleaner. Two teaspoons in a liter of warm water will shine your windows. Use crumpled newspaper to clean without leaving streaks.
