In Denver, we are no strangers to snow, and a lot of it. We’re also likely to have mixed feelings about its presence. However, there is something that we can all agree on. Snow sludge on our beautiful carpet is a nasty side effect and we’d all be better off without it. Denver Cleanpro would like to share some easy ways you can get snow sludge, that salty mess left over after snow melts on your carpet, out of those carpets for good.

Of course, the place to start is to attempt to prevent snow from getting on your carpet in the first place. Set a rule that shoes should be taken off at the door or outside. However, if this doesn’t happen and someone drags some snow in, don’t fret. Follow these simple steps and remember that for particularly stubborn stains it is fine to repeat the process if necessary.
  • Allow the area to dry naturally.
  • Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water.
  • Spray the stain little by little and then blot it out with a clean towel—remember not to scrub carpet so as to avoid spreading the stain further.
  • You could also choose to soak a cloth in the vinegar/water solution and lay it on the carpet for about 10 minutes.
  • Lastly, vacuum the spot and see how it turned out—check out our 7 vacuuming tips to learn more.
Important note: though it is common to use baking soda for many carpet stains, snow sludge is not one that you should use it for. Baking soda and the salt content of the snow will not react well to each other.
